Thursday, 26th August 2010 Term 3 Week 6
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
He mihi tenei kia koutou nga matua, me nga kaitiaki o a tatou tamariki.
Tena koutou katoa
As Kenakena's Principal it's important for me to ensure I find time to
visit classrooms to see the learning experiences being enjoyed by your
children. Recently I have had the opportunity to visit Sue Dore (Year
5&6) and Amanda O'Dowda's (Year 3&4) classes to see how they are
developing independent learning skills with their students including the
development of student voice and student choice in the way learning is
organised and managed. This encourages children to take greater responsibility
for their learning. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to students who were
very articulate about their learning.
I also had the pleasure of visiting Heather Nees' Year 2 class yesterday
to see them learning some beginning-level sewing skills being developed
during a learning activity based on the wonderful Maurice Sendak book,
Where the Wild Things Are. Parent helpers worked alongside children to
guide them through their learning. The kids were very excited about their
'final product'.
CARD CLUB
Heather Nees has been running a very popular Card Club on Tuesday during
the lunch hour, where children of all ages can bring their favourite collectable
trading cards for a session of sharing, swapping and playing games. Children
cooperate very well in a situation of shared interest and look forward
to their weekly session. During their club time they learn a lot about
the language of negotiation and trading, which is not a bad skill to develop.
PARENT EDUCATION LIBRARY: THIS WEEK'S FEATURED BOOK
Children's Grief: A Guide for Parents by Pam Heaney. "Children experience
grief for many reasons: loss of a loved one, a separation or divorce,
change of school or death of a pet. We can't protect them from these traumas.
Yet we can help children to fully understand and cope.
This book is a practical, straightforward guide to help adults talk to
children about loss, grief and death. It deals with the responses of all
age groups - from birth to teens. Its respectful advice explains children's
needs, and will help readers support children when they are at their most
vulnerable."
This book is available for parents to borrow on your children's library
code. The Parenting Section is on the first shelf to the right of the
entrance to the library from the foyer.

!!URGENT HELP NEEDED FOR PMP!!
Some of you will be aware that Kenakena School runs a Perceptual Motor
Programme for the New Entrants which is of huge benefit to not only the
children's physical well being but also aids their development in literacy,
numeracy and social skills.
However to run the programme we need adult helpers.
If you can spare 1 ½ hours (8.55 - 10.30) on a Tuesday, Wednesday
or Thursday please come and see me, Shona McDonald in Room 10, and help
keep this worthwhile programme running.
Thanks,
Shona McDonald
