Dear Parents and Caregivers,

He mihi tenei kia koutou nga matua, me nga kaitiaki o a tatou tamariki. Tena koutou katoa

Year 7&8 students were recently given the opportunity to have a go at sailing through a partnership with Yachting New Zealand and their ‘Have a Go’ programme. Forty seven of our students enjoyed sailing on Waikanae Estuary and Pauatahanui Inlet learning new skills and gaining confidence on the water. Organising teacher Sue Gray was impressed enough with Yachting NZ’s programme and organisation to make an advanced booking for 2011.

Thank you, to the parents who assisted with transport and supervision.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AT KENAKENA

Given the recent spate of natural disasters worldwide it is timely to update you on our emergency management plans at Kenakena.

Kenakena has sound plans to cover a range of emergencies in our Crisis Management Plan and Emergency Evacuation Guide. We also have a Pandemic Plan.

Our planning covers contingencies for earthquake, flood, tsunami, fire, terrorism, bomb threat, suspicious substance, dangerous intruder, chemical hazard and pandemic.

For earthquakes in particular, things mostly revolve around on-site management followed by any decisions to evacuate.

With flood alerts and tsunami, we rely on Civil Defence to give advice prior to evacuation decisions being made. We have a civil defence radio here at school which is tested on a weekly basis. We also rely on parents and Civil Defence to keep communication channels open. We have contingency plans in place should we need to keep a large number of children on site for a length of time. It is vital that you keep the school informed of your current emergency contact details.

The Kapiti Coast is regarded by Civil Defence as a ‘moderate risk’ area for tsunami compared to Wellington and Palliser Bay (High Risk) and Wairarapa (Very High Risk).

We also run earthquake drills and building evacuation drills at school.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTIONS

Triennial Board of Trustees elections are occurring shortly. Information on the elections will be communicated to you including information on nominations, which will be called for by March 15.

What is a school board of trustees?

Every state and state-integrated school in New Zealand has a board of trustees. Boards bring families, communities and schools together to work for a quality education for our children.

The board of trustees is a Crown entity. It is the employer of all school staff and sets the school’s overall strategic direction. The school's principal is the board’s ‘chief executive’ and manages the school operation in line with the board’s policies.

The membership of the school board includes elected parent representatives, an elected staff representative and the principal. If the school has students above Year 9, the board also includes a student representative.

For more information on the role of the board of trustees go to www.trustee-election.co.nz.

PARENTING TIP OF THE WEEK FROM PARENTS INC

Coming Home

Returning home after a busy day at work or having someone return home when you’ve been caring for children, gives everybody something to look forward to. The reality, however, can sometimes disappoint, especially if there is an unacknowledged mismatch in how you and your partner prefer to unwind.

If one of you needs quiet time to get changed and ‘file away’ the day’s events, and the other looks forward to lots of physical affection and conversation, what can be done? Be honest about what you need, be aware of each other’s preferences, and be willing to sometimes place your partner’s needs above your own.

“KEEPING OURSELVES SAFE”

Throughout the next few weeks Kenakena School will be taking part in the unit Getting Help, which is part of the personal safety programme Keeping Ourselves Safe. You would have received a notice about this a few days ago.

To be successful, Keeping Ourselves Safe needs your help and support. Parents are welcome to come to school and help with classroom activities. Information will be sent home about this. Some Home Book Activities will come home for you to work on with your child.

It is important that you participate as much as possible, so that you can reinforce the messages children are getting and help your child use his or her new skills with confidence.

A parents’ meeting will be held as follows:

Date: Tuesday March 9th

Time: 7pm

Venue: staffroom

More information can be found at http://www.police.govt.nz/service/yes/resources/violence/kos1.html

Strike Percussion Show

Fresh from wowing audiences in Melbourne and their highly successful collaboration with Kora at the Wellington Townhall, Strike percussion are coming to Kenakena School on Thursday March 11th.

This year the programme will feature repertoire from Strike’s recently released album “Sketches” including works from New Zealand’s premier percussion composer Gareth Farr. (The school will receive a copy of this CD). As the School Parent Network is subsidising this show the cost per student will only be $4.00.

Thank you once again to the SPN for their continued support of culture at Kenakena School.

This show is for all students.

Please send this money to school in an envelope with your child’s name and class number on it. Place the envelope into the RED box in the admin area.
